One of my companies was an "early adopter" of Google Adwords in the UK, so its Adwords account was opened in 2002 and has always been in USD (GBP...

One of my companies was an "early adopter" of Google Adwords in the UK, so its Adwords account was opened in 2002 and has always been in USD (GBP accounts weren't available in 2002).

USD/GBP exchange rate fluctuations mean we're gambling on the exchange rate each month when it comes time to pay the bill (that's fine for small spends, but if we scale up our ad spend it's too much risk).

It would be much easier to manage the account if it was switched to GBP, but Google say that means closing the existing Adwords account and opening a new one.

Does anyone have any experience (or unfounded paranoid hypotheses) of new Adwords accounts somehow getting a worse (or better) deal from Google in terms of QS, CPC, or anything else?

On closing the old account we would have to address all of the following:

Keyword/Stats history (but we could export it)

Credit account (we have a substantial credit line)

Trademark exceptions (we own the trademarks, so it'll just be some admin)

Existing campaigns (we only have a few small campaigns running)

Changing email address on old account before closing so we can use old email address on new account

Is there anything I've overlooked? Any risks I haven't considered?

Cheers, Tim.

Hello! Quick question- Our current website was built 6 years ago by a former employee who dabbled in SEO. One of the things he did to help u get more terms was to create several duplicate menus on the front page (which appears to have helped in some way as we are ranked well for our competitors).

Here is our current site:
http://floor-equipment.com

We are building a new site now. Would it hurt our SEO to eliminate some of the left side menus?

Here is our main competitor:

Yahoo! announced the acquisition of GeoCities for $3.6 billion. Ooops, wrong decade. That site was shut down 4 years ago. ;)

Where were we again...oh yeah...

Yahoo!'s board approved a $1.1 billion cash bid for Tumblr.

Nick Denton views a Tumblr acquisition by Yahoo! as a repeat of the porn-driven acquisition that eGroups was, while AllThingsD suggests the porn problem isn't such a big deal.

Marco Arment wrote about the rise of Tumblr here. Tumblr has copyright issues similar to that of YouTube, which may become more "in focus" now that the owner has money to be sued for.

Matt Mullenweg mentioned that a small number of people reacted to the acquisition news by shifting to Wordpress & John Battelle wrote about what Tumblr means for Yahoo!. The more interesting comment from Matt Mullenweg was his thoughts on revenue models, which was buried in the comments:
In an advertising business a lot of it comes down to attention: how much and where advertisers spend to get your attention usually lags 3-5 years from where people are actually spending their time, and when that gap closes it can be very impressive. Of course it doesn’t happen for free, there are lots of organizational changes needed to execute on that opportunity, and probably as many people screw it up as get it right.

I believe there is also an even-larger-than-advertising opportunity around subscriptions and products. The big shift from older forms of media is that people aren’t just passively consuming as they might in front of a TV, they’re creating. It’s a hobby and a passion, not a vice. In that context I think subscriptions are more aligned with users than advertising, and that’s the direction Automattic is pointed in.
